CHAIN Combat Practice How to Dodge CHAIN Chokes

The grab is a stat, the QTE is spam F, and the real counter is Q before the hand closes.

Choke Dodge

Choke is how clean CHAIN Combat Practice sessions still end in a cutscene. You learned to clash. You filled a metric. Then the lumberjack grabbed your neck because you deflected too many swings and forgot dodge was on cooldown. This page is the grab, not the X-Saw special. Pair it with combat stamina and controls.

What choke actually is

In Survival, choke is a hidden stat that builds when you deflect attacks. When it dumps, CHAIN grabs the current target, deals about 40 damage, and can rip ~40% combat stamina. Then a strength QTE (mash F on PC, face button on pad).

  • Win: you break out, slam his grip, get sprint back, run.
  • Lose: slam execute. The night is over for you.

That is distinct from a lost Machete block clash (stab plus headbutts) and from X-Saw fail (huge punish, you might still be standing). Choke fail is an execution unless a Combat Knife or 50w of X-Saw gas is holding you.

The real counter is Q, not F

Dodge (Q in Survival, not Chapter 1 Legacy) is a ~1 second i-frame. Use it before the hand closes — on the dash/charge tell, or right after a lost clash animation ends. Panic-Q on cooldown is how the grab lands for free.

A short community guide still circulates; pinned comments on it go stale. Current rule of thumb:

  • If you still have dodge, spend it on the grab wind-up, not on every M1.
  • If you are already in the grab, mash F. Do not mash Q during the grab animation if the window already died.
  • Low HP plus a successful dodge on a dash can dump sprint back. That is a stamina trick, not a choke cancel.

Console: watch the glyph. Mobile: the on-screen dodge is easy to miss while hunting letters. If you main touch, over-index on not building choke — fewer greedy deflects, more space.

Enraged choke

Enraged has a nastier grab, including a failed-dodge choke animation in the Winchester-era clip dump. The grab still wants F if it connects. The smarter play is not being in range with dodge down. Read Enraged before you “just fight the 65 seconds.”

Gym notes

CHAIN Practice Simulator may or may not copy the grab depending on build. If the dummy chokes, treat it as a gift and drill:

  1. Two clashes, then a deliberate dodge on the next dash.
  2. One grab you take so you feel the F mash speed at your FPS cap.
  3. Stop. Three execute animations in a row teach flinch, not skill.

If the dummy never grabs, use a private server. Solo pathing fills choke faster than a public lobby where three people share the deflects.

Do not stack choke drills with a brand-new Winchester special on the same timer. An empty combat bar plus dodge on cooldown is how the grab becomes an execute even when you “knew” Q existed. Keep one lesson per session: today the grab, tomorrow the metric. That is also why the practice routine ends the clock instead of letting you tilt-queue.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

What key dodges the choke?

Q before the grab connects. F is the mash if you are already held.

Does a Combat Knife save a failed choke?

Knife saves an execution if you are not already downed. Do not use that as your dodge plan.

Why does choke happen more when I play well?

It builds on deflects. Winning clashes feeds the grab. Keep dodge off cooldown.

Is this in the trainer?

Some builds yes. If not, export to a private server.
